President Barack Obama said in a television interview recorded on Saturday during a visit to Costa Rica. Venezuela said late last month it had detained an American called Timothy Hallet Tracy, accusing him of financing opposition student demonstrations after April’s disputed presidential election and saying he had clearly been trained as an intelligence agent. . . .

Obama says U. S. watching ‘crackdowns’ on Venezuela opposition

(Reuters) – The United States is watching "crackdowns on the opposition" in Venezuela, President Barack Obama said in a television interview aired on Friday when asked if he considered newly elected Nicolas Maduro to be the country’s legitimate president. Maduro, elected in April by a narrow margin, earlier this year accused the United States of seeking to kill opposition leader Henrique Capriles to stir chaos and spark a coup. Maduro’s mentor and predecessor, the late Hugo Chavez, was one of the world’s most vocal critics of the United States. . . .

Rhode Island lawmakers pass gay marriage bill; governor signs it

By Edith Honan (Reuters) – Rhode Island lawmakers gave final approval to a bill to legalize gay marriage on Thursday, making it the 10th U. S. state to extend marriage rights to same-sex couples and the last of the six New England states to do so. Governor Lincoln Chafee, an independent, signed the bill into law almost immediately after the vote on Thursday. The new law will take effect on August 1. "We would not be where we are today without the Rhode Islanders who for decades have fought for tolerance and freedom over discrimination and division," Chafee said. . . .
