ISTANBUL (Reuters) – An autopsy on the exhumed body late President Turgut Ozal, who led Turkey out of military rule in the 1980s, has revealed evidence of poisoning, a newspaper reported on Monday. There had long been rumors Ozal, who died of heart failure in 1993 aged 65, was murdered by militants of the "deep state" – a shadowy nationalist strain within the Turkish establishment of the day. He had angered some with his efforts to end the Kurdish conflict and survived on assassination bid in 1988. . . .

November 25th, 2012 admin Posted in salud publica | No Comments »

(Reuters) – More elderly and at-risk adults get their flu and pneumonia vaccinations when the shots are coordinated and given by nurses instead of doctors, according to a North American study. Researchers, whose results appeared in the Annals of Family Medicine, said that the change was linked to a 44 percent increase in patients’ chances of getting a flu shot and a more than doubling of their likelihood of getting vaccinated against pneumonia. The U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends all adults and children get the flu shot every year. . . .

German research points way to faster flu vaccines

November 25th, 2012 admin Posted in salud publica | No Comments »

LONDON (Reuters) – An experimental vaccine based on a molecule related to DNA protects animals against influenza and may one day offer an ultra-rapid way to develop new shots for humans, German scientists reported on Sunday. Assuming it also works in people, the new approach could allow commercial flu vaccines to be designed and manufactured in weeks rather than months. Making vaccines quickly is critical in fighting flu, particularly during a pandemic when health authorities and drugmakers are in a race to keep up with mutating strains of virus. . . .

November 24th, 2012 admin Posted in salud publica | No Comments »

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Taking extra choline during pregnancy does not improve babies’ language and memory skills, according to a new study. “I think eating the recommended amount of choline, which is just about a half of a gram a day for pregnant women, would probably do you well,” Dr. Steven Zeisel, the senior author of the study and a professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, told Reuters Health. “Going to high levels doesn’t always give you improvement. . . .

November 24th, 2012 admin Posted in salud publica | No Comments »

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Laws meant to prevent the overuse of expensive healthcare services don’t stop doctors from using pricey prostate cancer treatments, according to two new studies.
